Delta Region Description - Before the casinos sprang up out of the cotton fields, the Delta was famous as the birthplace of the blues. Today visitors can take in a performance at a real Delta blues juke joint. And cities like Greenwood and Greenville are known for hosting lively festivals celebrating the area's rich musical and cultural heritage.
Location - The Delta Region covers the northwest and west-central portions of Mississippi, bordering the Mississippi River on its western edge. It includes cities such as Greenville, Tunica and Clarksdale.
Attractions - The Mississippi River, its tributary system and countless oxbow lakes dot this region and provide numerous outdoor recreation possibilities. The Delta National Forest is also located here. Florewood River Plantation State Park, also located in this region, is a reproduction of a 1850's cotton plantation. Other outdoor attractions in the region include Great River Road State Park, Holmes Country State Park, Leroy Percy State Park and Winterville Mounds State Park. Mississippi’s Delta Region is a combination of quaint towns, wide open fields of cotton and the top casino destination between Las Vegas and Atlantic City. With nine casinos, over 6,300 hotel rooms, more than 40 restaurants, and three signature golf courses, Tunica, just 30 minutes south of Memphis, has become one of the nation’s hottest golf destinations.
Recreation - The Delta's lakes and streams are ideal for anglers looking for trophy bass or a boatload of bream. Many of the oxbow lakes such as Tunica Cut-Off, Lake Wittington, Lake Ferguson and Eagle Lake are famous for the consistent quantity of bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. Other activities available in this region include boating, water skiing, camping, picnicking, hiking and viewing historic sites.
Climate - Mississippi lies mainly in the subtropics. The climate is mild with the coldest monthsexperiencing low temperatures near 40 degrees F. Summer temperatures frequently reach 100 degrees F, with coastal breezes providing cooling relief. Humidity is highest in August and September reaching an average close to 90%. The highest rainfall comes during the spring months, but December and January are wet, too.
